What is Massotherapy?

Massotherapy is a generic term for medical or therapeutic massage. Massage therapy is one of the oldest and most effective forms of medicine. There is no documented scientific evidence why massage therapy works. We just know that it does.

Massotherapy is considered a holistic therapy because it aims to reduce the heart rate by helping to relax all the muscles of the body. It also helps to lower hypertension, improve blood circulation, improve lymphatic circulation, and promote the release of the body’s natural painkilling drugs such as endorphins and encephalins.

There is more than one kind of massage therapies techniques available. Each kind has its own style and focus. Some therapies help tone and maintain the body’s health while others work to relieve various kinds of pain and stress. Massage therapy aims to enhance the function of the lymphatic, nervous, circulatory, muscular, and skeletal systems. Through massage therapy, a healthier body is able to recover quickly from disease and infirmity.

Massage normally involves the manipulation of the body tissues to relieve tension and pain and to promote relaxation. Massage therapy also involves the holding of the positions which stretches the soft tissues and applies pressure to the body. The end result is that flexibility is increased and muscle tension is reduced.

Some of the more popular forms of massotherapy include sports massage, Swedish massage, trigger point therapy, and deep tissue massage.

A sports massage is intended for athletes for pre-game or post-game events. This particular massage helps athletes perform better and relaxes their muscles after intense exercise. It also helps to increase their flexibility, reduce muscle tension, and prevent injury.

The focus of a Swedish massage is to promote the circulation of blood and oxygen in the body and to encourage relaxation. Swedish massage involves different kinds of massage techniques such as kneading, long strokes, stretching, bending, and vibration.

Trigger point therapy utilizes a system of placing gentle pressure on tense parts of the body to relieve stress and pain.

Finally, deep tissue massage is a procedure that emphasizes the manipulation of the deep layers of muscle tissue. The therapist’s hands massage the tense areas of the body using deep pressure and slow strokes. These methods loosen the muscles and promote good circulation of the blood and oxygen in order to relieve tension.
